When Was the Last Time Your Chimney Was Inspected?

Understanding the 3 Levels of Chimney Inspection

NFPA 211, the Standard for Chimneys, Fireplaces, Vents, and Solid Fuel-Burning Appliances, establishes three levels of inspection based on the condition of the system and the circumstances surrounding its use.

LEVEL 1 | Routine Inspection

A Level 1 inspection examines the readily accessible portions of your chimney, fireplace, and venting system. It is generally appropriate when your system has remained unchanged and is being used under normal conditions.

LEVEL 2 | More Detailed Inspection

A Level 2 inspection is more comprehensive. It includes the Level 1 inspection, additional accessible areas of the chimney system, and a video scan of the internal flue. It may be appropriate when there has been a change to the appliance or fuel, during a property transfer, or following certain events that could have affected the chimney system.

LEVEL 3 | Investigation of Concealed Areas

A Level 3 inspection is the most extensive. It may be needed when a potential problem is suspected but cannot be fully evaluated through a Level 1 or Level 2 inspection. Access to concealed areas may then be necessary to properly determine the condition of the chimney.
